There were two good friends who were labourers during the time of the British in Singapore. One of them was newly married and so had more financial responsibilities than the other and so was always more worried about having to make more money than he had.
One day the friend told him the British were paying better than normal rates on one shift of a bridge project but the catch was that the hours were very bad.
The workers on the shift would have to start at 4 am. The married man was all for ot anyway so the friend met the construction site supervisor and managed to get the two of them accepted. He told the married man he would come for him at about 3.30 in the morning and they could go together.
That night the married man was tossing and turning in bed all night, making his wife very irritated, but there was nothing he could do, he just could not sleep.
At an early hour of the morning he thought he heard his friend call his name. He told his wife he would have to go now and quickly got his things together and walked across the road to where his friend was waiting. The friend was standing behind a lamp-post so his face could not be seen.
“Lets go,” the friend said and started off at a strong pace. The married man tried to keep up with his friend but every time he tried to catch up, the friend seemed to move further away.
Back at the married man’s home, his wife heard the family friend knocking on the door and calling her husband’s name. Worried, she quickly opened the door and found the friend smiling and cheerful.
“Where is he, the sleepyhead? Is he ready to go?” he asked.
“What are you saying? He left with you just half-an-hour ago, I thought, “ she said.
“Half-an-hour ago? With me? But I only just got here. It is 3.30 now, isn’t it?” the friend protested.
The woman looked at the clock and it was just 3.35. Alarmed now, she quickly related how her husband had heard his friend call him and had gone outside to meet him across the road.
The friend was equally alarmed, thinking it might be an imposter out to create trouble for his friend. He quickly ran towards the construction site to see if his friend had turned up for work.
His friend was indeed there, but only the head had been found. In a ditch.
The body was never recovered.
