I was sleeping alone in the prefect’s room on a Saturday evening, after a hard night of studying. There was no mattress or anything there, of course, so I had to lie down on the table. It was about 2 am in the morning and there was hardly any movement around. There was someone studying in one of the rooms two classrooms down, but it was no one I knew and the usual crowd had chosen not to study that night.
I was feeling pretty much alone.
I had heard a few stories about the prefect’s room so that night was pretty much a test of courage for me too. But being aware like that also means you tend to listen for anything unusual, and you know when you do that, anything can sound unusual.
I heard the sound of chains.
Not the ball and chain of the Western prisons of old, mind you, just a small but clear sound that went “chink chink”. I listened hard.
It was, I thought, definitely coming from the ground floor (the prefect’s room where I was, was on the first floor). As I lay in the dark room with my eyes closed, I wondered what that noise might be from.
Finally, I decided it must be the night guard doing his rounds, tossing his keys as he walked.
But the sound did not seem to be moving.
Tired of guessing, I gathered enough courage and opened my eyes.
The noise stopped. My heart was pounding in my throat and my breathing became shallow.
That must have been a coincidence, I told myself. Then I heard it again. This time, I was sure it was downstairs. I got up, switched on the light and stepped outside the room.
The student who had been studying two rooms down must have given up and gone home because there was no light from that room anymore.
Being on the higher floor, I could not look into the corridor below. I was not about to go downstairs to investigate.
What I did was I tried to peek on the rails. I couldn’t see anything. It was difficult. As I listened, I could still hear the “chink chink”. It was vague but it was not moving, almost as if whoever it was making that noise was still in the same place but just making it more quietly.
I was all tensed up and staring over the rail when suddenly two dogs started howling in the field in front.
I jumped out of my skin.
I had not even seen the dogs into the field. There they were, howling away. I tried to make them out and as my eyes grew accustomed to the dark, I could make out two figures on the field. Later it became clear what they were doing. They were copulating. I tried to laugh (softly) and tell myself it was just hyped up for nothing. The noise had stopped too and did not resume, so I told myself it was probably the jaga I had heard, went back into the room and went back to sleep.
I did, however, just out of sheer laziness, forget to switch off the light this time.
