It was a damn boring night. But heck, doing guard duty is never interesting. You listen to the crickets screeching, to a stray dog barking at nothing in particular, to the buzz in your ear that tells you you’re listening to nothing either, really. Damn boring.
In this boredom, Recruit Cheng imagined his M16 and bayonet to be a spear and pretended to practice kung-fu. This was one way to keep awake. He stretched himself, and strained his muscles to keep his arm still. It hurt. Sheesh, the sort of things people do when they’re bored. As if he had not done enough bayonet exercises in the day.
Recruit Cheng hoped no one saw him perform this stunt. Especially his sergeant. He had no wish to do extra bayonet training the next day.
Above, the fluorescent tube blinked.
Then-he felt it. Behind. There must be someone behind.
Recruit Cheng swung around as quickly as he could. He nearly stumbled. But when he saw the beautiful figure before his eyes, he forgot his alarm. Recruit Cheng scratched his head awkwardly instead.
For she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. She had large black eyes and a sweet, timid smile. Her hair was tied into two innocent ponytails and she wore an old-fashioned samfoo. She looked seventeen Sweet, innocent seventeen.
Recruit Cheng immediately thought, “Wow, what a cute chick! In the middle of the night too! What else can a cute chick be looking for in the middle of the night?” He could hardly stop himself from drooling.
The girl flashed him a mesmerizing smile and gestured to him. Unable to resist the magnetic attraction, Recruit Cheng walked towards her helplessly. It was as if his eyes were glued to her lovely figure, and his feet were under her command.
She glided into an unlit area of the camp. Recruit Cheng could not but follow. This was an uncleared part which was overrun by shrubs and bushed. Although there was still a long time left before dawn came, a thick mist was swirling aimlessly. It reminded him of the ghost scenes from the drama serials on TV.
By now, this young recruit was sure the girl was no ordinary being. Questions flooded his mind: How did she get into the camp? Why did she lead me here? Did she create this unnatural mist all around us?
But the doubts that crowded his consciousness vanished the moment she embraced him. Her soft touch. Her Ivory hands. And the sweet fragrance of her body.
They slept through the night.
Recruit Cheng was awakened by a rude shaking. “Recruit, wake up!”
”Yes sir!” Conditioned by so many weeks of training, he sprung fiercely to attention. Then he noticed the unkempt state of his uniform and all his undone buttons.
His superiors, faces stern and angry, started in disbelief. “You bloody shiok,right? Come here and sleep!”
The recruit tried very hard to defend himself. “No, no sir! I not voluntary, sir. Everything was this girl’s fault. She so horny, lah…”
He told them the story there and then. The officer asked a few questions, like what did she look like? How old? What did she say?
Recruit Cheng replied accordingly, except for the last question, because the girl didn’t say anything throughout the whole encounter. It was if she was mute or something.
The more the recruit revealed, the more astonished the faces of his listeners became. In fact, there was more than astonishment there. Curiosity, disgust, horror – they all had a mixture of expressions.
The officer eventually decided, “I’m afraid we can’t take your story as an excuse. You come back with us first to see the OC.”
In the end, although Recruit Cheng was not charged with AWOL, he was still punished with many extra duties and had to stay in camp for more weekends than others. His story was circulated around.
Later, it was learnt that there were rumours of this attractive girl in a nearby village who died a few months before Recruit Cheng’s ghostly experience. The girl was seventeen.
And she was mute.
