When I was in Pre-University, I was good pals with one of my teachers. She was an English teacher and she always treated me like an adult. She told me once about this book (I can’t remember the title now), a collection of true short stories involving the supernatural, in fact, the film, The Exorcist, which was running in Lido cinema at that time, was based on one of the short stories in that book, I was told.
I begged her to lend it to me. She was reluctant, saying that every person she knew who read that book had said something unnatural had happened to him or her while reading it. She herself, she said, felt queasy when she read it. It was a strange kind of feeling, she said, something she had never felt before.
This, of course, had exactly the reverse effect she must have expected. I demanded that she lend me the book. Eventually, when I got it from her, with a warning not to take it too seriously, I took it back home with me eagerly. However, I could not start on the book until 10.30 pm, I remember, when I finally settled down to read it.
It was quite fascinating. Then, at exactly midnight, I could hear a grandfather clock from one of the flats chiming and just when the chime ended, I heard a baby wailing.
It sounded like it was just outside my window.
I had this eerie feeling. Every night, for so many nights after that that I lost count, at exactly midnight I would hear a baby wail.
I cannot recall now when exactly this stopped. But even now whenever I heard a cat yowl, this incident comes back to mind and makes my hair stand.
