When I had just turned 21 my family threw a birthday party for me. We cleared the hall of our three-room flat of furniture and moved the hall divider to the side of the living room wall, facing the master bedroom, and opened all the doors so people could move in and out freely.
My friends started trickling in at about 8 in the evening and after dinner, which was served on paper plates, we were settling down to some serious partying. At about 10 or so, the music began to play real loud. This was the first time we were throwing such a party and my neighbours were invited too, so we didn’t expect any trouble from anyone.
The guys and girls were all relaxed and we were started dancing. There were quite a few couples on the dance floor and a few standing around watching. There was one song that one of my close friends really liked and he shouted, “Hey! Turn it up! Turn it up!”
I don’t know who it was that went and turned up the music but even if you turned up the volume on the strongest amplifier in the world it could not explain what happened next.
There were two British-made, heavy but compact loudspeakers atop the divider which was, as I said, parked against the wall on the left. And suddenly, as one of my close friends told me later, he felt something cold move around him like a cold wind and rush past. Suddenly, those two speakers, heavy and solid, flew from the top of the divider, across the breadth of the living room, straight into the master bedroom with a huge crash.
All conversation stopped.
The hall, which had been so noisy and rowdy just a moment ago, became quiet as a graveyard. For a whole minute, I think, nobody spoke.
Then my dad, wanting to play down the incident, went and picked up the speakers, had a look at them and fitted them back in place. There was no dancing after that. Nobody felt like partying anymore that night. The memory remains in my head and still sends a chill down my spine when I think about it. And the odd thing about it was there were so many witnesses.
Thank goodness we have never had anything like that happen again in our house since. But then, we had learned our lesson. Whatever it was in our house that had almost destroyed those speakers had only done it because we must have irritated it with all that noise it wasn’t used to. It had made its point. We never held a loud party there again.
