My school was built in the 1930s, so the original buildings are old, ancient looking, with Gothic structuring. In the first year of opening, St Patrick?s College, Silverstream, New Zealand, was a full boarding school. A young junior student by the name of Patrick Silvering was reported missing on one of the summer mornings, just 2 months into opening. The police were contracted and search parties were sent out to look for the boy, but to no avail as Patrick was never found. He was reported to be sleepwalking, but was never stopped.
Some 67 years later, while a class of senior Agricultural students were walking back from a cattle lifestyle lesson on a farm just past the college?s boarder, some of the boys, since they had time between then and the next period, decided to take a swim on the stream, commonly known as the ? Silverstream ? as it was a hot summer afternoon.
As they were stripping, one of the boys noticed a bone like structure in a cave partially submerged by water. The teacher was called and the object was investigated. The police were called in and soon rumors spread round the school that a skeleton was found. This was true as the skeleton remains were of Patrick Silvering, the junior student lost many years ago!
It was a wonder that with the stream tides being unpredictable, that no lives lost after the Patrick Silvering incident. The family requested that Patrick?s remains be scattered over the ? Silverstream ?, as a spiritual protection to future swimmers.
In 1998, in respect to Patrick Silvering, St Patrick?s College, Silverstream created a mascot in his name, with Patrick?s name in close content to the College, ? Silvy Man ? was unleashed and his spirit would fuel SPC Silvertsream?s spirit in the quest to urge on our sporting teams to victory.
